A Proud Wife

So the BIG news: Garrett made the BYU Men’s Soccer team. It was a tiring and emotional week. Garrett wanted it so bad. I wanted him to make it because I knew how happy it would make him. Garrett tried out last March for the Spring team and was one of the final 3 to get cut. He has been practicing with the team over the past few weeks. The guys on the team are really supportive to him and always invite him to pick-up games. Cory Cosgrave and Josh Patino have been so nice to him and been really supportive.

Tryouts were Wednesday night and results were posted on Thursday around 1:30 pm. Garrett had a few sleepless nights this week and was struggling with a pulled abdomen. Garrett said he noticed that the list had been posted earlier than he thought. The morning of the results he wasn’t feeling very good about it and had thought he wouldn’t make it. When he saw the list he said everything was just a blur and only his name stood out. He said he stared at the list for about 20 minutes hoping that his name wouldn’t disappear.

The coach took 32 players. That’s a LOT! The teams is formatted where each practice the players will play short, 20 minute games and keep track of individual wins. The players with the most wins will be considered for starting positions. I like it. Garrett is no longer satisfied with being on the team. He’ll be working his butt off to make sure that he gets some playing time. He will need to make sure that he’s not one of the few players that get cut Spring season.

Also cool – RARELY does BYU soccer pick up walk-ons. Everyone on the team was a recruit and promised a spot on the team. Garrett along with one other young man successfully walked-on. Supposedly this is very rare, and doesn’t happen most seasons.

I look forward to spending my Friday nights watching his games and cheering him on. Here is his game schedule so far:

Fri, Sep 24 Utah State South Field 7:00 pm

Fri, Oct 08 Alumni Game South Field 4:00 pm

Fri, Oct 08 Weber State South Field 7:00 pm

Fri, Oct 15 Utah Valley South Field 7:00 pm

Every night, I work out at the gym and by the time I finish there, Garrett’s practice will be done. So there won’t be too many conflicts in the schedule.

I am most excited that this will basically guarantee that Garrett will get a degree. Garrett was recently dropped from the Industrial Design program and has been struggling to find a major that would be appropriate for him. We’ve been debating between 1. Picking a fast, useless major just to have degree 2. Switching schools 3. Quitting school 4. Going to school as long as he is learning and not getting a degree. This semester he is taking the classes he wants in various programs and is going to school right now to get an “education,” not a degree. Now that Garrett is on the team, and if he remains on the team, he will stay at BYU full time long enough to double major if it means he can keep playing soccer.

Anyway, THANKS to everyone who has supported Garrett. We are so blessed with great family and friends. We hope to see you at all the games.
